Warm up Qs Flashcards

Q

Why CDP? (4)

A
  1. Ecologist who sees the intrinsic value of nature, can’t comprehend how others don’t see that, really admire how CDP markets environmentalism in a way that appeals to ‘non-traditional’ actors, i.e. companies/investors etc.
  2. Impressive track record; struck by this when I was reviewing the 2025 strategy, would be proud to work for a company that has achieved so much and continues to demonstrate it’s a force for good.
  3. As a scientist, understand the importance of data for evidence-based decision-making, think CDP has brought monitoring and reporting to the forefront which is a pragmatic way to solve problems.
  4. Really love the values of ‘transparency’ and ‘learn and improve’ - no one is perfect, but we should all try to be honest and do our best to do the right thing as much as possible

Q

Why the role? (3)

A
  1. Passion is ecology, want to do something to help, have specialist knowledge and experience that is unique and don’t want to waste that/want it to benefit others.
  2. Frustrated by the pace of progress on forest-related issues, want to play a practical role in the solution, want to work directly with entities causing the most damage (i.e. CDP’s clientele) as I feel will have most impact.
  3. Been looking for a technical role that isn’t in academia, my current role is operational but I want to be analysing and problem solving: this role perfectly aligns that with my interests.

Q

Why should we hire you? (3)

A
  1. First-hand experience with forest-related challenges: it’s one thing studying something and another experiencing it first hand, lived and worked in three tropical locations for a total of 8 months, developed my understanding of nuance e.g. palm oil creates jobs.
  2. Extremely organised and precise: don’t do things randomly, always have a reason/able to justify, check my work thoroughly, careful with the words I choose, would take this role very seriously as a lot is riding on the data.
  3. Communication: technical capability is important but need to be able to communicate the value of the data to non-specialists, tell a story. Had training in sci comm but also naturally a very sociable person with good interpersonal skills, which is why I’ve succeeded in an engagement role. Able to break concepts down, observe how that is received and tailor my approach accordingly to aid understanding.

Q

How do you organise yourself? (5)

A
  1. Itemised to-do list
  2. Colour-coded based on activity
  3. Every task also has its own deadline, so tasks are listed in chronological order (i.e. closest deadlines first)
  4. I focus best in the early morning so I tend to do my creative/technical work then. I reply to emails after lunch and schedule meetings in the afternoon because that’s when I tend to flag and speaking to others energises me.
  5. However, I am responsive to changing circumstances and if this format isn’t possible every day that’s fine!

Q

How do you like to work? (4)

A
  1. Energised by collaborative work; I’m continually fascinated by how other people’s brains work and how they always think of things I never would.
  2. However, enjoy lone working. I’ve always been a solo learner and make the most progress when I work on something alone and can focus 100% on the task.
  3. Therefore, perfect situation is a mix. For example, an initial brainstorming meeting, followed by lone working on the task, then a review meeting to discuss the outcome with colleagues.
  4. I like regular check-ins with my manager to get feedback and working alongside them on tasks so I can learn, but I’m happy to use my initiative most of the time. If I have questions I will ask.
