Q

Describe Fires

A

DEFINITION: “Fires is the use of weapons systems or other actions to create specific lethal or non-lethal effects on target.”

Fires seek to delay, disrupt, degrade, or destroy enemy capabilities as well as to affect the enemy’s will to fight. It is the selective application of fires to reduce or eliminate a key element resulting in a major disabling of the enemy system.

The Commander is not seeking physical destruction – the cumulative effects which are felt slowly – but the disruption it causes the enemy. Fires are normally used with maneuver to help shape the battlespace, and set conditions for decisive action.
