Sword Farm tools Longbow Crossbow Staff weapon Cannons
How did swords change throughout the Middle Ages?
13th century: broad and flat, crushing blows against chainmail armour.
Late 14th century: thin with sharp point, thrust between plate armour.
Longbow
Range: 350m, highly accurate up to 200m Could penetrate plate armour with sufficient force Confusing storm of arrows 8-12 shots per minute Considerable skill and strength required
How did weaponry change throughout the Middle Ages?
Edward I passed law in 1363, all able-bodied men had to practise with longbow every Sunday. Increased use of longbow in English armies as a result of this.
Crossbow
Very forceful - could penetrate plate armour
Very hard to draw back, mechanical device (cranequin) used
Slow fire rate: 2 bolts per minute
Staff weapons
Wooden pole with pointed end
Schiltron - lots of spearmen close together form an impenetrable dome
Bad in hand-to-hand combat
How did armour change throughout the Middle Ages?
Better steel production meant more plate armour; iron was no good for plate armour because it was brittle.
Cannons
First used around 1320
Projectiles were initially stone, iron from 15th century
Not many around until 15th century - very expensive
Could explode upon firing
Not used much
