Why did Phillip plan an armarda

A

Phillip saw the 1585 treaty of nonsuch as a declaration of war on Spain. In response he began building an armarda that he planned to use to invade England
E was aware of this attack. In 1587 she sent Francis drake to spy on Spanish preparations and attack ships and supplies

1)Most of the new ships for the Armada were being built in the Portuguese port of Lisbon. This deep water port was protected by strong fortifications- couldn’t attack

What happened after raid of Cadiz

A

D sailed along coast of Spain and Portugal seizing ships and destroying supplies which were being sent to Lisbon for armada
D captured San Filipe a Spanish ship returning from the americas laden with gold spices and silk.
It’s valuable cargo easily covered the cost of Ds expedition and enabled E to improve englands defences

A

Had a major impact on Philips plans to invade England delaying the armada by more than a year buying England more time to prepare for the eventual Spanish invasion in 1588

Importance of Cadiz 2

A

Obtaining fresh supplies and weapons was very expensive and seriously strained spains finances
During his raids D captured more than 1000 tons of planks made from seasoned wood which were need to make the barrels to carry food and water. Spanish had to make barrels from unseasoned wood which couldn’t preserve food and water very well.

A

It had inflicted temporary damage however it hadn’t destroyed it entirely it would “grow back” in time
