War Photographer Flashcards
What is the poems meter…
Iambic Pentameter to show how serious the nature of this message it accompanies but also to show how this has been normalised now.
What does the Cyclical Structure show…
Shows how his job is repetitive and shows all the horrors he sees.
‘Finally alone’
This adverb shows his exhaustion but also shows his relief to be alone away from all the suffering he sees.
‘spools of suffering’
Vivid imagery and sibilance emphasise the horrors of the battles but is also a metaphor for the picture tapes.
‘set out in ordered rows’
This is also imagery to show the bodies laid out like a grave.
‘only light is red’
This is a euphemism to show the blood in the pictures.
‘priest preparing’
The alliteration and religious imagery juxtaposes the battlefield showing how he asks for forgiveness from God for his job.
‘Belfast.Beirut.Phnom Penh’
Listing is an example of holophrasis which shows how much suffering there is around the world.
‘All flesh is grass’
Backed up by ‘He has a job to do’
This metaphor and short sentence emphasises how he is now desensitized and sees bodies so much that they are nothing to him.
‘Solutions’
This is ironic as there’s no solution to war.
‘Solution slops in trays’
This onomatopoeic sound emphasises the development of the picture, which brings a harsh reality of war.
‘.Rural England’
This caesura and short sentence shows how England is opposite and in contrast to a battlefield.
‘fields don’t explode beneath the feet of running children’
This imagery of children creates an emotive image of children and the suffering they face that they should face.
‘Nightmare…Ghost’
These images show that he is haunted by the pictures he takes.
‘Something is happening.’
This short sentence creates suspense and tension in the reader
‘a half-formed ghost’
This draws a parallel between the physical development of the picture but also creates a horrific image of a dying man.
‘someone must’
This imperative shows that this job needs to be done by someone for others to see what really happens.
‘editors will pick out five or six’
This phrase emphasises the anger of the photographer as they casually pick the ones they need but ignore all the others.
‘prick with tears…beers’
The alliteration and internal rhyme emphasise his anger more as they ignore the suffering that is in front of them.
‘they do not care’
This shows his anger even more. However, this is ambiguous as it could mean the reader, the victims or the editors.
