War Photographer Flashcards
what is it about
-a photographer who has came home from his trip, hes in his darkroom and is thinking about the different places he went to
-stanza 2 hes reminded about the contrast of the places he went and rural england
-stanza 3 he thinks about the death of the man in the photo and the cries of his wife
-final stanza he realises that the people who read the newspaper are likely to ignore the photographs
context
-the poem is about how we fail to grasp the reality of war
structure
-has a very tight and controlled structure,4 stanzas each made up of 6 lines, rhyme scheme follows the same pattern
-this perhaps reflects the war photographers job, trying to impose order on the chaos of war
-however suffering of war cannot be tightly ordered, the structure seems to contrast the topic of the poem
-unchanging structure could reflect the futile efforts of the photographer are futile
-use of caesura separates “rural england” from the war zone, reflects how those in the poem seperate themselves from war
cyclical structure
-begins with the war photographer coming home from a trip and ends with him going on another trip this once again highlights the futility of the war photographers job
