war photographer Flashcards
ambiguity and imagery
‘with spools of suffering set out in ordered rows’
spools emphasises the pain and anguish people have to suffer in war.
Repetition of the s sound (syballance) creates a soft sound emphasising the pain experienced during war.
Ordered rows reminds us of mass war graves and the set up of a church
imagery - “the only light is red and softly glows as though this were a church and he a priest preparing to intone a mass”
Religious imagery is significant as it suggests he takes his job very seriously.
‘red’ reminds us of a confession box where you confess your darkest sins to a priest in the same way he knows the darkest sins of the world.
just as a priest holds responsibility and power for how people are remembered through a eulogy the war photographer has power for how the victims of war are remembered through his photographs and it really matters to him.
