The Narrator
The Narrator is an intellectually curious open minded person who clearly shows that he is a writer and nothing else.
The Martians
The Martians are presented as a greater life form than humans which links to the Great Chain of Being. We are told that since their planet, mars is becoming unhabitable, they try inhabiting Earth instead. They seem to take it over using physical force and weaponry. They don’t seem to consider peaceful cohabitation.
The Curate
The Curate is a religious man who can not comprehend how the Martians have arrived on Earth and why this would happen to the human race. When The Curate is buried under the Martian cylinder in the abandoned house, he agitates the Narrator and he starts eating large amounts of food when he is in danger of starving to death. He proceeds to be very childish when the Narrator cuts of his food supply and goes to try and be heard by the Martians. However the narrator knocks him out with the butt of a knife and the Martians then end the Curate’s life.
Ogilvy
Ogilvy is an astronomer and scientist. He doesn’t believe that the Martians can exist as he says ‘The chances against anything man-like on Mars are a million to one’ Despite being assured that there are no Martians, he is one of the first ones to fall with the rest of the Deputation as he is driven to try and make peace with the Martians when they arrive.
The Artilleryman
The Artilleryman is one of the soldiers fighting the Martians. The artilleryman thinks that everyone else is weak and tells the narrator that they should live in the sewers and have only the strongest people there where they can overthrow the Martians. However, when they go into the sewers the artilleryman presents himself as lazy as he keeps asking for water and food breaks which leads the narrator to think that the artilleryman is overzealous and scared.
