What was the main threat to British civilians at the start of the war?

A

The Germans unlike the British made extensive use of Zeppelins in the early stages of the war. They would float across to Britain drop large payloads which aimed to damage infrastructure and harm morale.

Which areas were targeted by Zeppelin attacks?

A

The First ever raids hit the area around Dover Castle in December 1914. In January 1915 2 Zeppelins bombed Great Yarmouth and King’s Lynn leading to 5 deaths. On the 31st of May 1915 the first ever attack happened on London.

Why were German Zeppelin attacks ultimately ineffective?

A

The British began taking defensive measures such as introducing blackouts and creating spotlights. Fighter aircraft and anti air position were also established. Only around 550 were killed and 1350 wounded whilst 5750 were injured by bombs.

Why did the Germans introduce Gotha Bombers and what did they do?

A

They were introduced as an experimental alternative to Zeppelins as they had become too easy of a target. They were first tested in November 1916 and were able to drop 6 bombs on Victoria station.

Give a notable examples of Gotha Raids?

A

In June 1917 the first major Gotha raid was carried out as 14 bombers were deployed killing 160 people.

Between June and November 1918 240 raids were carried out and around 540 tonnes of bombs were dropped.
