Jus in Bello: what does this mean?

A

How you should behave during a a war itself.

  • You can’t use civilians as shields/hostages and an example of an unjust action in a war was WW2 and the blitz bombing.
  • Conventions about treating prisoners with respect need to take place.
  • You should not respond to an attack with a disproportional attack.

  • The end result has to be better than if you didn’t start the war in the first place.
  • People argue that Afghanistan was not better off after the US intervention.
  • The American Civil war is a just war.

  • These are holy wars, fighting to defend a religion.
  • Popes order a Crusade.
  • Muslims got persecuted by the Christians in a crusade.

  • It keeps peace as a deterrent.

Christianity and pacifism…

A
  • For 300 years, Christianity was pacifist. When Constantine came to Rome the religion was no longer pacifist.
  • This was because it was believed to be a just reason for going to war, so the country would not be Invaded.

A
  • 4th century Christians started to believe in the idea of a just war, aided by St Augustine of Hippo.

A
  • means “before the war”
  • there are two reasons to go to war;
    self defense and to defend others
  • To make a war a just war, you have to be able to win the war.
