In 1863 there had been a treaty to dramatically reduce homeland in Oregon. The leader of the Nez Perce was Chief Joseph. General Howard decides that the Nez perce need to move within 30 days or face war. The Nez Pierce respond by killing American settlers. They win a key victory at Big Hole and repulsed Americans as they moved North. Howard catches them as they are about to go into Canada- after 8 years of captivity 50 percent had died
