One in four English men fought at some point during the war. Around 11000 houses were burned or demolished, including historic stately homes such as Basing House and Corfe Castle. 150 towns saw serious damage and an estimated 5 per cent of Englandโ€™s population died due to war or disease - a higher proportion than died during WW1.
