Plate that rest on the subfloor
Bottom/sole plate
Horizontal members which tie the studs together at the top and bottom of the walls.
Plates
Plate that caps the top ends of studs
Lower top plate
a) installed on top of lower top plate
b) interlocks walls and provides support for roof members
c) installed after walls have been erected, squared, and plumbed
Upper top plate
Vertical members that run between the top and bottom plate.
Common studs
Constructed wherever a wall ties into another wall and provides nailing corner surfaces for inside walls.
Corner posts
- ) Take the place of common studs above and below wall openings.

Cripple studs
Horizontal structural member installed over the top of a wall opening that distributes the load to either side if the opening. Tops of doors and windows.
Header
Support the header and run from the bottom of the header to the sole plate.
Trimmer studs
Provides support for the finished window and frame that will be placed in the wall.
Rough windowsill
Installed between studs to inhibit the spread of fire.
Fire blocks/ stop
Stiffens wall frames, helps resist twisting and straining, and keeps corners square an plumb.
Bracing

Studs are notched to let in braces diagonally from top to sole plate
Braces are CUT at an angle and inserted between studs in a diagonal progression from too plate to sole plate.
Cut in
Each panel acts as a brace for the wall
