Structure
Written in four stanzas, divided into quintent. The rhyme scheme ABACA uses simple monosyllabic rhymes.
Only the odd number lines rhyme, which refers to the separation occurring between the father and his son.
Type of metaphors used
‘Half fledged’ refers to the fact that the father is concerned that his son is not ready.
‘Eddying away’ compares the son to something moving in water which reflects his lack of self-control
What’s affect of the rhyme scheme
ABACA- reflects the steadiness of the father’s emotions
Repetition of A reflects how the memory continues to effect him years later

‘What god alone could perfectly show’
‘Wrenched from its orbit
The leaves are turning
A seed loosens from its parents stem.’
