Microclimate importance
One degree Celsius is all it takes to raise a patients metabolic demand by 10 to 13%. This increased need for oxygen and energy in a patient with compromised skin, significantly increases their RISK for pressure injury development.
Patient Risk - microclimate
When patient heats up, their bodies will sweat. Trapped heat and moisture can damage fragile skin.
Facility risk - microclimate
PI are expensive. Stage 3 & 4 can cost up to $70,000. Lowering the risk from the beginning is the best way to keep costs down and maintain good patient outcomes. And protecting patients with the proper cushion while seated is key.
NPUAP - microclimate
Select a cushion and cover that permit air exchange to minimize temp and moisture at the buttock interface.

Cushion and Overlay material won’t rub off with use. patient receive a protective barrier between them and the cushion and overlay.
Hole through and through
Cushion and overlay help dissipate heat and promote good air exchange. In addition, the holes stretches to minimize soft tissue distortion and shear.
NPUAP - overlay
Consider replacing the mattress with a support surface that provides more effective pressure redistribution, shear reduction, and microclimate control.

Immersion and envelopment was deemed particularly important upon egress or ingress of the patient
Waffle vs Low air loss (LAL)
Waffle is 4.3 degree F cooler than LAL at average temp. Waffle is 4.8 degree F than LAL at peak temp
