  • when working away from the office the salience of an individuals work may be reduced
  • when at a work space there are cues reminding you that you are work / these cues make us salient with our work
  • As such working remotely from ones team may reduce the salience of ones identification with the team and/or the organisation.

  • the flexibility to work from anywhere and potential at times that suit you can help meet the need for autonomy that is central to theories such as self-determination theory.
  • substantial concern in remote work is that supervisors might micromanage the behaviors of their employees, for example by tracking keystrokes and camera usage. Research on face-to-face teams suggests that micromanaging is likely to have a demotivating effect

advs + disadvantage of remote work

  • social isolation:
  • making sure employees don’t feel isolated from their colleagues
  • lack of face 2 face interaction may feel they are not connected to others
  • combat this with a in the office day (hybrid)
  • work and family conflict:
  • Working from home creates unique challenges for remote workers because the work role becomes embedded in the family domain such that their home comes to be associated with the work role
  • People who integrate their work with their personal life may have trouble setting boundaries and making time for what is important
