W8 lecture Flashcards
What is gnathology?
The study of masticatory system:
- Physiology, anatomy, histology
- Functional disturbances
- Diagnostic methods and treatments
What does masticatory system include?
- Lower jaw
- Upper jaw
- TMJ
- Teeth
- Tongue
- Masticatory muscles
- Mimic muscles
- Salivary glands
Characteristics of articulatio temporomandibularis
- Limited/ Ginglymoarthroidal
- Bilateral
- Symmetrical/asymmetrical movements
What is physiologic rest position?
- The mandibular position assumed when the head is in an upright position and the involved muscles, particularly the elevator and depressor groups, are in equilibrium in tonic contraction
- The condyles are in a neutral, unstrained position
- Free space 2 - 5 mm
Which position are the condyles in? (physiologic rest position)
They are in a neutral, unstrained position
What is ICP - independent of condylar position?
The position of the mandible of the cusps and sulci of the maxillary and mandibular teeth are in their greatest contact and the mandible is in its most closed position
What is retruded contact position?
Guided occlusal relationship occurring at the most retruded position of the condyles in the joint
What is intercuspal position?
The vertical and horizontal position of the mandible in which maximum occlusal contact occurs
In CR-position
Features of open-close movement of jaw
- Symmetrical movement
- Two-stage: terminal hinge axis and translation
- 35 - 40 mm
Characteristics of propulsion/ repulsion movement
- Symmetrical movement
- Anterior guidance
Characteristics of lateropulsion/mediopulsion
- Asymmetrical movement
- Working side/ balance side
- Canine guidance/ Group function
Which phenomenon is this?
Christensen phenomenon
= well trimmed occlusal rims
Occlusion with complete denture
-> What is BILATERAL BALANCE?
This type of occlusion that is seen when the simultaneous contact occurs on both sides in centric and eccentric positions
Occlusion with complete denture
-> What are benefits of BILATERAL BALANCE?
- Helps to distribute the occlusal load evenly across the arch => Thus, helps to improve stability of the denture during centric and eccentric or parafunctional movements
