W8: Drake Equation, SETI Flashcards
What is Drake Equation?
- a formula developed by
Frank Drake in 1961 to estimate the number of civilizations in the milky way galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable
Whats the value you calculated for N?
and meaning
N = 24
* estimate of the number of civilizations in the Milky Way Galaxy whose electromagnetic emissions are detectable
explain your thoughts on the results you obtained with your ideas of possible intelligent life in the universe before taking this class.
Before taking this class, I only know and heard about life outside the universe through science fictions, tv shows, and fantasies. Now that I’ve gained a bit more understanding about the possible life outside earth, and learning about the drakes equation, I am impressed to know more about the vast universe and the actual possibility of other potential life in the universe.
SETI
Search of Extraterrestrial Inteliggence
What is Fermi Paradox
- named after physicist Enrico Fermi
- Fermi Paradox consists multiple hypothesis and explanations about the the probability of the existence of extraterrestrial civilizations in the universe and the lack of evidence of their existence. For example, such as they might be avoiding us, they are already here with us, they are jus watching us, or they are too far away.
two explanations from fermi paradox and explain why you think we haven’t detected intelligence life yet
Space is too vase
* the universe is a vast space. sending out transmission signals might take years before the other end receive it, and if they end up receiving the signal, it might also take years again to receive their message.
Our wires are crossed
* there might be miscommunications on both sides due to the differences in the technology used, and the methods to communicate on both ends.
