W3 Chapter 5.4 - Implicit and Self-Attributed Motives Flashcards
What is an incentive?
The degree to which an action can satisfy a particular need for a person
In what two ways can specific satisfaction of needs be accounted for?
- Incentives
- Self-attribution
How do needs differ from incentives?
Needs influence behaviour in a nonconscious level, while incentives (values) influence conscious choice processes.
What is an implicit motive?
A motive assessed indirectly because it’s relatively inaccessible to consciousness
What is a self-attributed motive?
A motive that’s consciously reported.
What is another term for self-attributed motives?
Explicit motives
What measures are used to determine implicit and self-attributed (explicit) motives, respectively?
Picture story exercise (PSE) is used to measure implicit motives, while self report measures are used to measure self-attributed motives.
What implicit motives also known as?
Motives
What are self-attributed motives also known as?
Incentives
What situations are implicit motives best for predicting?
Broad behavioural tendencies over time
What situations are self-attributed motives best for predicting?
Responses in structured settings
What types of memories do implicit motives elicit?
Implicit motive predict recall of specific events
What types of memories do self-attributed motives elicit?
Self-attributed motives predict recall of general memories related to the self-concept
What evidence is there for the notion that implicit and self-attributed motives are different and separate?
- Incongruence in implicit and explicit motives causes distress
