W2 Stimulus Identification & Visual Processing Flashcards
What are the three stages within reaction time?
Stimulus identification, response selection and response programming
Define stimulus identification
When the stimulus is detected and identified
What are the three factors affecting stimulus identification?
Clarity, intensity and modality
Define and give examples of exteroception
The awareness of external stimuli e.g., sights, sounds and smells
Define and give examples of interoception
The awareness of what is going on inside our bodies e.g., heart beat and respiration
Define and give examples of proprioception
The awareness of where our body is in space (movement). e.g., sensing movement and action
What are the photoreceptors of the eye?
Rods and cones
What are rods sensitive to?
Light
Where are the majority of the cones located?
The fovea
What do cones detect?
Colour
Why do we use rods at night?
They detect things at a lower resolution and therefore see colours less clearly
Define what is meant by binocular vision
Where two fields of view overlap, allowing good perception of depth. In the region of 160° to 180°.
Name the two visual streams
focal vision (ventral) and ambient vision (dorsal)
Which visual stream is conscious and therefore open to illusion?
Focal vision (ventral)
What is optical flow?
Describes that when an object is moving towards us the pattern of light across the back of the eye ball will change.
