W2 - Endotracheal Tubes and Laryngoscopes Flashcards
What are the four components of an endotracheal tube?
Tube, Cuff, Connector, and Cuff inflation system
Why are endotracheal tubes curved?
To follow the patient’s airway anatomy
What is the purpose of the bevel at the tip of the endotracheal tube?
- To help force the tube through the cords
- To increase the field of vision
How were endotracheal tubes originally connected to the anesthesia circuit?
Via a rubber connector
How was the seal originally obtained for an endotracheal tube?
Subglottic packs containing topical anesthesia
What are the three components of the distal end of an ETT?
Bevel, Murphy Eye, Cuff
What is the purpose of a Murphy eye?
To provide an alternate gas pathway
What are the preferable traits for a cuff?
High pressure; low volume
Large surface area
What two substances can be used to fill the cuff and when are they used?
Air and saline can be used
Saline is used for laser procedures, otherwise air is used
What is an anode?
An ETT that has a wire-reinforced wall. It is used when the ETT may be bent
What is a RAE?
An ETT with a sharp bend that curves the ETT away from the head and neck. It is used for head and neck surgeries.
What is a Cole?
An ETT used for pediatric cases. It is small, has no cuff, has a shoulder, and is tapered
What are the five steps for ETT preparation?
- Inspecting the ETT for integrity and safety
- Seating the connector
- Checking the cuff integrity
- Deflating the cuff
- Knowing how much air is in the inflation syringe
What are the four parts of a laryngoscope bade
Tongue, Web, Flange, and Base
