W2 Conditions Flashcards
What are conditions?
Abiotic environmental factors that influence the functioning of living organisms
Organisms respond to conditions:
-Optimal conditions are those that provide optimal fitness
Fundamental and realised niche:
Fundamental Niche:
-Entire set of conditions under which an organism can survive and reproduce
-The theoretical habitat, not always occupied due to competing species
Realised Niche:
-Set of conditions used by an organism after including interactions with other species
-The actual habitat that is occupied by an organism in the presence of competing species
Temperature-size rule:
-Final size of an organism decreases with increasing temperature during development
Thermoneutral zone:
-For endotherms regulating body temperatures requires a large amount of energy
-Over a certain temperature range, known as the thermoneutral zone, an endotherm consumes energy at a basal rate
-But at environmental temperatures above or below that zone, the endotherm consumes more energy to maintain the constant body temperature
