W11- Unconventional O&G Flashcards
1
Q
Tar sands (oil sands)
A
Unconventional oil that can’t be pumped from ground in its natural state.
Combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen
2
Q
Tight oil
A
Conventional oil found in reserves with low permeability
3
Q
Shale oil
A
any sedimentary rock containing bituminous materials (kerogen).
Ex-situ and in-situ extraction (heating w/out crushing)
4
Q
Tight gas
A
NG reservoirs are locked in impermeable, hard rock.
Pores not connected- harder to extract
5
Q
Shale gas
A
NG locked in tiny bubble-like pockets within sedimentary rock- hard to extract
6
Q
Coalbed methane (CBM)
A
form of NG extracted from coal beds.
CH4 extracted from coal to reduce hazards
