Soft tissue repair stages
- Bleeding

Bleeding stage 1
Blood clot - stop bleeding immediate
- First aid
- POLICE
- Avoid heat, alcohol, running, massage
- Avoid ibuprofen for 48 hrs, paracetomol instead
Inflammation stage 2
Fibroblast macrophage scab - prevent onset of new bleeding allow inflammatory process to take place with little swell8ing as possible
Early: 0-72 hours
- Overlaps with bleeding so treat as much
- Continue POLICE
- Continue to avoid HARM
- Taping
Late: 72 hours-6 days
- Can begin to massage proximally to site depends on severity, effleurage and petrissage
- Venous return, reduce anxiety, reduce cortisol
Proliferation stage 3
Fibroblasts subcutaneous fat
2/7 to 6/52
- Avoid disturbing healing tissue
- Venous return
- Promote proliferation
- Normalise tissue length
- Prevent excessive scar formation
- Superficial massage to injured site
- Static stretching
Remodelling stage 4
Freshly healed epidermis and dermis
3/52 to 12/12+
- Encourage appropriate fibre alignment
- Prepare tissue for return to sport
- Optimise tissue function
- Deeper massage techniques
- Friction
- Muscle energy techniques
- Soft tissue release
