W1 Labster Simulation (Lab): Assess and Compare Biodiversity On An Exoplanet Flashcards

1
Q

What is the biodiversity index (BI)?

A

It is a measurement of how diverse a certain area is and it is found by the number of species found in an area divided by the total number of individuals in that same area. Species/total individuals

Q

What is a quadrat and how is it used?

A

A way to assess biodiversity by placing it in areas that have more life but it should be placed randomly and depending on how big of an area you are trying to get an estimate of and how much life is in that area, you need to adjust the number of times you place the quadrat on the ground. ALSO, it is best used for sessile organisms

Q

What is a pitfall trap and how is it used?

A

A pitfall trap is usually a bucket of some kind that is placed in the ground to catch different individuals to assess BI in an area. It must be checked often. ALSO, it is best used for small organisms that move on the ground.
