w1 Flashcards
What is ‘k’? How is it found!
Rate constant. k= rate/concentration
What is the overall reaction order equation?
k = [A] ^m [B] ^n
What is overall reaction order?
– Zero-order reactions: the units of k are mol L-1 time-1
– First-order reactions: the units of k are time-1
– Second-order reactions: the units of k are L mol-1time-1
About orders:
Zeroth: Plot [A] vs T
First: Plot ln[A] vs T
Second: Plot 1/[A] Vs T
Properties of molecules that determine reaction rates?
Concentration of reactants
(increase concentration and reactions go faster)
* Temperature
(to make a reaction go faster, heat it. To slow it down you cool it).
* Steric effects
(You may not have thought of this, it is related to how molecules
run into each other, must have right orientation).
* Phase
(Reaction rate tends to go Gas>Liquid>Solid)
Collision Theory
Must collide, with sufficient kinetic energy, in the correct orientation
