W1 Flashcards
Propagation
What is it? - sounds moving through a medium
Why is it important? - describes how sounds move through diff things like air, metal, water
Amplitude
What is it? - the extent of how a wave move. How much, how often. the compression and expansion of it
Why is it important? - it shows low and high, soft and hard a sound hits a speaker
DBFS
Decibel of full scale - a unit of measurement for amplitude levels in digital systems
DBSPL
Decibel of sound pressure level - unit of measurement for sound pressure
zero to 100 being the loudest represented in the computer
Timbre
what is it? - the character of a sound/voice as distinct from its pitch/intensity
why important? - its a descriptor of different variations of the sound/voice
Frequency
What is it? - how fast something vibrates - can be measured by a computer pitch
Why important? - sounds needs to follow a frequency to produce continuous sound - 1 hz is one cycle per second. range is 20hz - 20K Hz
Sonogram
What is it? - plots sound frequency x time
Why important? - shows the history of timbre and octove changes. It shows the fine differences in sound
spectrum analyzer
what? measure frequency against Amplitude
why? it can measure sound at different level of HTZ - 2K, 5K etc.
Oscilloscope
What? - used to measure timing information around a signal
Why? - able to visualize complex signals of wave forms
Transducer
Mic, instrument - converts sound pressure in air to volt pressure
called in audio signal
