W0 Physical principles governing body function - Jason Potas Flashcards
What are the SI units that make up the derived unit, Newton (N)?
m.kg.s^-2
What are the SI units that make up the derived unit, Hertz (Hz)?
s^-1
where 1 Hz is 1 sec, 2 is 1/2 sec.
What are the SI units that make up the derived unit, pressure (Pa), often measured biologically as mmHg.
(m.kg.s^-2)/m^2
N/m^2
What is the definition of work and how is it measured?
Force x distance
N.m
(m.kg.s^-2).m
Define viscosity.
the degree of ease at which layers in a liquid slide over one another. A lower viscosity indicates more slippery, a higher viscosity indicates less slippery.
Define when laminar flow occurs.
When flow increases proportionally with pressure
Define when turbulent flow occurs.
after a critical velocity when flow is not longer proportional to pressure.
What is torque?
What is a lever? List the 3 classes.
A twisting force, measured as force (N) times radius (m) or N.m
The radius is also called the lever, and is defined by its orientation to the fulcrum.
The fulcrum is the centre of the circle, ie the axle of the rotation.
E.g.
1st class = fulcrum between lever and effort
2nd class = lever between effort and fulcrum
3rd class = effort between lever and fulcrum
