W-E-D And Topo Maps Flashcards
Erosion
Process that move sediment from one place to another
Deposition
Laying down of sediment that has been eroded
Meanders and oxbow lakes
Meander-bend in river
Oxbow lake-meanders that gets cut off from the river
Floodplains
Level strips of land on the sides of a river that are made of sediment that are deposited during flooding
Deltas and alluvia
Fan shaped deposited at the mouths (end) of streams
Topographic map
Two dimensional model of earths surface
Contour line
Connects points of equal elevation
Relief
Is the difference between high and low elevation
Contour interval
Is the difference in elevation between the difference must be the same between all lines
Index contour
Usually every fifth my darker and has an elevation printing on it printed on it
Rules for Contour
1) contour lines never cross
2) contours form closed loops even if not shown on the map.
3) Contor bend upstream a when crossing a stream
4) The maximum possible elevation for a hill is one less than what the next contour should be
Closer
Steeper slope equals contour lines are closer together
Farther
gradual slope equals contour lines are farther apart
Benchmark
A location whose Exact elevation is known and is noted on a brass or aluminum plate benchmarks are shown on maps with an X with the letters BM written
Map scale
Indicates the distance on the map compared to distance in real world
