W,E,D Flashcards
What is erosion?
Processes that move sediment from one place to another
What is deposition?
The laying down of sediment that has been eroded
There’s two types of weathering. What are they?
Mechanical and chemical
What is weathering?
Processes that break down rock
What 4 things cause erosion?
Water, wind, glaciers, and gravity
What are examples of water erosion?
Stream erosion, rain drop erosion, wave (beach) erosion
What are the formations of deposition?
1- delta and alluvial fans
2- flood plains
3- meanders and oxbow lakes
What are meanders?
A bend in a river
What is a oxbow lake?
Meander that gets cut off from a river
Is weathering a destructive process or constructive?
Destructive
What are examples of weathering?
Grand Canyon
What is an example of erosion?
A mud slide
What are examples of deposition?
Waves dropping sand on the beach
A fanned shape deposits at the end of the mouth of a stream. What is this?
A delta
Strips of land on the side of a river made of sediments that are deposited during flooding. What is this?
Flood plains
Meander that gets cut off from a river. What is this?
Oxbow lake
Bend in a river. What is this?
Meander
What are examples of mechanical weathering?
- growing plants(roots break rock apart)
- burrowing animals
- freeze/thaw cycles of water
What are examples of chemical weathering?
- oxidation (oxygen combines with water to form rust)
- acid rain
- plant acids
What is chemical weathering?
Chemical reactions dissolve the rocks or change them into different minerals
What is mechanical weathering?
Rocks are broken apart by physical processes
What is wind erosion?
Depends on size of sediment and velocity of wind
What is glacier erosion?
Breaks off pieces of rock as it moves over it- these pieces move with the glacier until they are deposited somewhere else
What is gravity erosion?
Movement of sediment due to the pull of gravity
