w/4 Vision and Sensory Processing Flashcards
What are the Two general phases of Visual Processing?
- Sensation
- Perception
Explain Sensation.
→ Detecting the presence of stimuli, it refers to the process of receiving sensory information from the environment through our sensory organs (e.g. seeing light or hearing sound).
Explain Perception.
→ Integrating, recognizing and interpreting patterns of sensations, it is the brain’s interpretation and organization of that sensory information, allowing us to understand and make meaning of the world around us.
What are the three main approaches to understanding sensation & perception?
- Phenomenological approach
- Psychophysical approach
- Physiological approach
Explain Phenomenological approach
→ Focuses on subjective experience and conscious perception, to understand how individuals perceive and interpret sensory information based on their personal experiences.
Explain Psychophysical approach.
→ Focuses on the relationship between physical stimuli and perceptual experiences, to quantify how changes in physical stimuli affect perception.
Explain the Physiological approach.
→ Investigates the biological and neural mechanisms underlying sensation and perception, to understand how sensory organs, neural pathways, and brain structures process sensory information.
