Vygotsky's theory of cognitive development Flashcards
Outline Vygotsky’s theory of learning
Vygotsky said learning is a social process and said that learning occurs in a sequence, where each stage is qualitatively different depending on age.
What did Vygotsky say about knowledge
Knowledge is first intermental and then becomes intramental
What process did Vygotsky emphasise was important in learning
Language
How did Vygotsky focus on cultural differences in learning
Vygotsky said that children develop reasoning abilities through those they have contact with, therefore they learn the mental tools that are useful physically, socially and mentally within their own culture
Define the zone of proximal development
the gap between what a child can do alone and what they are capable of after interactions with others
What is childrens ability to understand and cross the ZPD limited by?
their developmental stage
What do interactions with MKO’s help the child to develop
their understanding of the world as well as more advanced mental functions.
What is scaffolding
Help that is provided by MKO’s to help the child cross the ZPD
Who developed the theory for stages of help
Wood, Bruner and Ross
What are the 5 stages of help?
5 = demonstration
4 = preparation for the child
3= indication
2= verbal instructions of the task
1= general prompts
Stages of help gradually reduce as the child better understands the task.
