It was a series of events involving the U.S. Navy and North Vietnamese: confusion, alleged attacks, and presidential response.

How and why did the Vietcong seem stronger?
Well organized and could act quickly, due to South Vietnam suffering because of the Hamlet program. Local support: Won people round with propaganda.
What was Operation Rolling Thunder?
Rolling Thunder was a bombing campaign that targeted the Ho Chi
Minh Trail and industrial areas in North Vietnam. As well as bombs, the
US also dropped napalm (a burning chemical) and pineapple bombs
(which shoot pellets everywhere when they explode).
Chemical warfare—Operation Ranch Hand: What was it?
The US first used chemical weapons in Vietnam in 1961. They sprayed crops and jungle with
herbicides to make the VC easier to find, and to cut off their food supply.
