What is contact dermatitis?
Non-scarring inflammatory reaction characterized by chronic itching or burning.
What type of hypersensitivity reaction is contact dermatitis?
Delayed type IV hypersensitivity reaction.
What is the most common cause of chronic vulvovaginal pruritis?
Contact dermatitis.
What is lichen simplex chronicus?
Chronic inflammatory, nonscarring disease of the vulvar skin characterized by intense and unrelenting itching and scratching. (thought to be a localized variant of atopic dermititis given strong personal/family link to allergies).
What is the most common symptom of lichen simplex chronicus?
Chronic or intermittent pruritis accompanied by vigorous scratching or rubbing. Occurs most frequently in the evening and during the night leading to sleep disturbance.
In what age group is lichen simplex chronicus most common?
Middle to late adulthood.
What is lichen sclerosis?
Chronic scarring dermatologic d/o that affects the anogential skin.
What age group is most affected by lichen sclerosis?
Prepubertal girls and postmenopausal women?
What is the pathogenesis of lichen sclerosis?
Unknown - possibly autoimmune process and genetic factors.
What is the prevalence of lichen sclerosis?
Unclear as the condition is often asymptomatic and goes unrecognized by physician.
What is lichen planus?
Scarring inflammatory d/o of the skin, oral mucosa, and vulvovaginal area.
What is the pathogenesis of lichen planus?
Unclear - possibly dysfunction of cell-mediated immunity and concomitant autoimmune d/o.
What age group is affected by lichen planus?
Perimenopausal and menopausal women.
What is the prevalence of lichen planus?
<1% of the population.
What percentage of individuals with erosive vulvovaginal lichen planus will have oral involvement?
70%
