Anatomical extent.
Proximal DVTs - thrombus present in popliteal or more proximal vein
Distal DVTs - thrombus present in vein distal to popliteal vein
** note that the popliteal vein extends somewhat below knee, so above and below knee DVT is incorrect terminology and should not be used to guide management
