Vte Flashcards
What three factors make up virchows triad
Circulatory stasis, hypercoagulable state and endothelial injury
What is hypercoagulation
Changes in blood coagulation
What causes hypercoagulation? X5
Increased levels of clotting factors as pregnancy progresses Sepsis Oestrogen therapy Surgery/trauma Coagulation deficiencies
What is endothelial injury
Changes in vessel wall
What causes endothelial damage? X2
Trauma to pelvic veins as fetus passes through the fetus
Other causes eg smoking PET diabetes
What is circulatory stasis
Changes in blood flow
What causes circulatory stasis? X2
Hormonally induced decrease in venous tone
Obstruction to venous flow as uterus enlarges
What other factors attribute to virchows triad?
Diet, exercise and lifestyle
DVT symptoms x6
Leg pain/discomfort Usually sudden onset Swelling, tenderness Increased temperature Lower abdomen pain Increased WBC
Treatment for DVT x5
Heparin Warfarin Teds Intermittent pneumatic compression Mobilisation/physio
What is virchows triad compromised of
The 3 main factors that predispose us to thrombosis
