VT for Eye Movement Disorders: Saccades Flashcards

1
Q

Q

What are the fail criteria for the DEM?

A

Below the 16th percentile in Ratio or Error scores. (It is suggested that this be with no symptoms, and below the 32nd percentile with symptoms.)

Q

The primary goals and objectives of VT for oculomotor dysfunctions is to normalize (or at least maximize) eye movement skill, and to eliminate (or at least reduce) symptoms related to eye movement dysfunction. What is the typical length of therapy?

A

Anywhere from 8 to 24 sessions

Q

During VT, accuracy is the first priority, followed by speed, then by automaticity and transfer of skill. Begin with ____(gross/fine) movements at _____ (far/near), then proceed to ____(gross/fine) movements at _____ (far/near).

A

Begin with gross movements at far, then proceed to fine movements at near.

Q

When should you use a metronome for a saccade VT task?

A

If the task is predictable, but only once accuracy has been achieved.

Q

The following are phases of saccade training as presented by Dr. Erickson. What sort of saccades are being developed in each phase?

Phase Ia:
Phase Ib:
Phase II:
Phase III:

A

Phase Ia: gross saccades (predictable)
Phase Ib: gross saccades (less predictable)
Phase II: fine saccades (predicable patterns)
Phase III: reading-pattern saccades

Q

Phase Ia of saccadic therapy trains predictable gross saccades. The following are tasks that are used during this phase. Which of these involves a chart that can be either used whole or cut into various configurations?

Corner/Doorway saccades
Hart chart variations
Alphabet pencil saccades
Sequential fixator
Meter stick saccades
A

Hart chart variations

Q

Phase Ia of saccadic therapy trains predictable gross saccades. The following are tasks that are used during this phase. Which of these involves feedback via an after-image flash?

Corner/Doorway saccades
Hart chart variations
Alphabet pencil saccades
Sequential fixator
Meter stick saccades
A

Corner/doorway saccades (try to line up the after-image with the corner of the door); note that you can use this during a 4 corner saccadic task with a Hart chart too.

Corner/Doorway saccades
Hart chart variations
Alphabet pencil saccades

Q

Phase Ib of saccadic therapy trains less predictable gross saccades. The following are tasks that are used during this phase. Which of these involves motor response to light and gives feedback with light and sound? How is this training type scored?

Laser spelling
Continuous motion worksheet
Wayne Saccadic Fixator (or similar)
Saccadic Fixations Workbook Series
Wayne Directional Sequencer
Sequential fixator
Computer VT programs
A

The Wayne Saccadic Fixator–light come on along certain points of the instrument, and the patient’s task is to touch the light. The scoring system can either be based on speed (self-paced) or on number of hits (instrument-paced).
The Wayne Directional Sequencer is very similar in function, but has the patient follow a series of arrows in deciding which button to push.

Q

Phase Ib of saccadic therapy trains less predictable gross saccades. The following are tasks that are used during this phase. Which of these is similar to a sequential fixator, but includes motor feedback via a pencil or a laser?

Laser spelling
Continuous motion worksheet
Wayne Saccadic Fixator (or similar)
Saccadic Fixations Workbook Series
Wayne Directional Sequencer
Sequential fixator
Computer VT programs
A

Continuous motion worksheet or laser spelling (both involve searching saccades and a pencil or laser to find letters or numbers in a certain sequence among randomized letters or numbers)

Word finds
Moving window programs
Michigan (Ann Arbor)
Symbol counting
Dotting O's
A
