Reasons for English colonization
A
- Wanted to increase England’s wealth and power
- Hoped to find silver and gold
- America had natural resources that could not be grown or obtained in England

- Primarily an economic adventure (to make money
- Stockholders of the Virginia Company of London financed (paid for) the settlement of Jamestown
- Became a permanent settlement in 1607

Why the area was chosen for the Jamestown settlement
A
- Easily defended from attack by sea (by the Spanish)
- Water was deep enough for ships to dock
- They believed the water supply was fresh
- No Powhatan were living there

- Starvation
