What were the 5 stages that extended suffrage in America?
Stage 1: Early 1800’s – Elimination of religious and property qualifications
Stage 2: 1870 – 15th amendment: protected any citizen from being denied suffrage because of race or color or previous servitude
Stage 3: 1920 – 19th amendment gave women suffrage
Stage 4: 1960’s – Voting Rights acts/24th amendment (eliminating poll taxes)
Stage 5: 1971 – 26th amendment gave 18 yr olds suffrage

Why is voter Registration controversial?
Opponents say it disenfranchises the poor and less educated
Proponents say it helps to stop voter fraud
