What is crowdsourcing?
-online distributed problem solving and production model that leverages the collective intelligence of online communities for specific purposes set forth by a crowdsourcing organization
What is citizen science?
- public engagment in scientific research. citizens contribute to science either with their intellectual effort or surrounding knowledge or with their tools and resources
- non-experts collect data, research design and analysis.
what is VGI?
GI acquired and made available to others thru voluntary activity of individuals or groups, with the intent of providing info about the geographic world
How to classify VGI?
- by reasons data were created (allocentric vs egocentric)
- by type of knowledge encoded (scientific, geosocial/personal)
- by process for creating data (active vs passive (when ppl creep ur fb an take ur data) )
what are the 4 lvls in citizen science projects
crowdsourcing > distributed intelligence > participatory science > extreme citizen science
Why do people contribute spatial data?
- personal/professional itnerest
- altruism
- reputation
- pride in community
- protect personal interests
- intellectual stimulation
