Volume And Density Flashcards
What is volume?
The quantity of space an object takes up is called its volume
The SI unit of volume
Cubic metre m^3
1 cubic metre to litres
1000 l
1 litre to cubic centimetres
1000 cm^3
I litre to ml
1000 ml
1 cubic metre to dl
10000 dl
Cubic centimetre to ml
1 ml
Density
The degree of compactness of an object
Formula for density
Density = mass / volume
Density of water in kg/m^3
1000 kg/m^3
Measuring volume of a regular solid
If an object has a simple shape, its volume can be calculated with a formula of the length * width* height.
Measuring the volume of a small irregular object
Measure the change in volume in a measuring cylinder filled with water.
Measuring the volume of an irregular object
A eureka/ displacement can is filled to the top and the volume of the water that flowed out and collected in the beaker is equal to the volume of the object lowered into the can.
Measuring density of an irregular object
Calculate the mass using a balance and calculate the volume using a displacement can. Divide the mass by the volume.
