Volume Flashcards
What is volume?
The amount of space taken up by a 3D object
What units do we usually use to measure volume?
Centimetres cubed (cm3) or metres cubed (m3)
What is the mathematical name of the 3D shape below?

A sphere
What are faces , edges, and vertices?
A face is a flat surface of a 3D object
An edge is where two surfaces meet
Vertices are the corners of a 3D object

What is the mathematical name of the 3D shape below?

A cuboid
What is the mathematical name of the 3D shape below?

A Cube. A cube is a special type of cuboid where its width, length and height are all the same.
What is the mathematical name for the 3D shape below?

A Cylinder
What is the mathematical name for the 3D shape below?

A triangular prism
What is the mathematical name of the 3D shape below?

A cone
What is the mathematical name of the 3D shape below?

A hexagonal prism
What is the formula for finding the volume of a cuboid?
Length times by width times by height ( l x w x h )
What is the formula for finding the volume of a cube?
Length x Length x Length or Length cubed ( l3)
What is cross sectional area?
Cross sectional area is the area of a thin slice of an obejct.

What is a prism?
A 3D shape that has the same cross sectional area all the way through the shape.

What is the formula for the volume of a prism?
Cross sectional area times by length

If you have a cube of side length 3cm, what will its volume be?
27cm3
If a cuboid has length of 4cm, width of 3cm and height of 2cm, what is its volume?
24cm3
If a cube has a volume of 8cm3, what is the length of one of its sides?
2cm
How many faces, edges and vertices does a cube have?
6 faces, 12 edges, 8 vertices
What is surface area?
The combined area of all of a 3D objects surfaces
What is the surface area of this cube?

There are 6 faces
Each face is 4cm2
6 x 4cm2 = 24cm2
What is the surface area of the cuboid below?

Cuboid has 6 faces
2 faces of 7cm x 6cm
2 faces of 6cm x 2cm
2 faces of 7cm x 2cm
All six faces add to 136cm2
