Volleyball Terms Flashcards
When the ball is served to the other team and no one touches it.
Ace
A defensive play by players close to the net who leaps with his/her arms outstretched in front of the spiker in an attempt to deflect the ball back to the spiker’s court. The serve may not be blocked.
Blocking
Join your arms from the elbows to the wrist and strike the ball with the fleshy part of your forearms in an underhand motion. This is the first hit in the game.
Bump
A one handed, clenched fist recovery shot that is often hit low or close to the ground.
Dig
An illegal move that implies that the same player has touched the ball twice in succession.
Double hit
The team winning three of the five games.
Match
Divides the court in half so that each team has a playing area to stay in while playing.
Net
When the ball lands outside the boundary line, or contacts the ceiling. If the ball lands on the line, the ball is considered “in bounds”. A player may go out of bounds to return the ball to the other side.
Out of Bounds
If not sure of the call, the point is replayed without a point or side-out being declared.
Play Over
Scoring method where points can be won by the serving or receiving team.
Rally
The flexed, yet comfortable posture a player assumes before moving to contact the ball.
Ready Position
A movement of players to a new position in a clockwise direction before a new player serves.
Rotation
The initial hit that puts the ball in play. It is the beginning of the rally. The player in the right back corner serves the ball and can stand any where behind the line. The ball is allowed to touch the net on the serve.
Server
A pass executed with both hands open, controlled by the fingers and thumbs, played just above the forehead. It is a high pass, close to the net, hit so that the spiker can drive the ball into the opponent’s court. Typically the most athletic player on the court. Must be quick, skillful and accurate.
Setter
A strong downward hit ball into the opponent’s court to complete the third hit.
