Rules of Volleyball

A

• First service determined by a coin toss
• Server must serve from behind the end line
• You can use either under or overhand service
• Your opponent must be able to see the ball before you serve it
• Loser of a set serves first for the next set

Rotation

A

• Once a team wins the serve, each player rotates one position clockwise before the next serve.
• The player in the right front position moves to right back and becomes the server.

Game Play

A

A maximum of three hits per side
• A player cannot hit the ball twice in succession (a block is not considered a hit).
• The ball can be played off the net on a serve or when it is on its way over the net to the opposing team during a volley.
• A ball touching the end or side lines is considered “in.”

Basic Violations

A

• Stepping on or over the line when serving
• Fails to serve the ball over the net
• Handles or hits the ball illegally (carrying, palming, throwing etc.)
• Touches the net with any body part while the ball is in motion
• Reaches over the net, except on a follow through or when blocking
• Reaches under the net
• Fails to serve in the correct order
• Hits the ball on the court
• Team hits the ball more than 3 times before it crosses the net
• 1 player hits the ball twice in succession
• Takes more than 8 seconds to serve
