Volcanoes Quest Flashcards
Magma
A molten mixture of rock-forming substances, gases, and water from the mantle
Lava
When magma reaches the surface
Ring of Fire
Major volcanic belt
Volcanic Belts
Form along the boundaries of Earth’s plates
How does magma reach the surface?
At plate boundaries, huge pieces of the earth’s crust diverge (pull apart) or converge (push together). As a result, the crust fractures, letting magma reach the surface
Volcano
A weak spot in the crust where molten material, or magma, comes to the surface
Where do volcanoes form?
Along diverging plate boundaries such as mid ocean ridges, nor along converging plate boundaries where subduction takes place
What happens along a Rift Valley?
Lava pours out of cracks in the ocean floor, gradually building new mountains
Pahoehoe
Thin, runny, has less silica
Aa
Thick, doesn’t go very far, more silica, more viscous
Physical property
Any chracteristic of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the composition of the substance
Chemical property
Any property that produces change in the composition of matter
Compound
A substance made of two or more elements that have been chemically combined
Element
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances
Viscosity
The resistance of liquid to flowing
