Volcanoes/Earthquakes Flashcards
Inner core
Centre and the hottest part of earth
Crust
The solid rock area upon which we live
Mantle
Made up of semi molten rock called magma
Outer core
Made from liquid nickel and iron it is a liquid layer and extremely hot
Asthenosphere
Upper layer of the earths mantle
Lithosphere
The crust and the upper part of the mantel
Continental drift
The gradual movement of the continents across the earths surface through geological time
Radioactive decay
Atoms of some elements release particles from their nuclei and gave off heat
Convection current
Stream of fluid propelled by thermal heat
Divergent boundary
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving away from each other and a new crust forms from the magma that rises to the earths surface between the two plates
Convergent boundary
A tectonic boundary where two plates are moving towards each other
Collision boundary
Two plates moving together
Conservative boundary
Two plates going against each other but they slide and jolt forwards this causes pressure to build up and release as an earthquake
Shield volcano
Low viscosity, running lava
Seismometer
Instrument that records earthquakes
