Volcanoes Flashcards
Active Volcano
An active volcano is a volcano that has had at least one eruption during the past 10,000 years. An active volcano might be erupting or dormant. An erupting volcano is an active volcano that is having an eruption.
Andesitic Lava
The SiO2 content of andesitic lava is between 52 and 63 percent of its composition. It has a higher viscosity than basaltic lava and thus flows at a slower rate. Lava domes are commonly produced as andesitic lava is forced to the surface. Andesitic lava typically originates from stratovolcanoes.
Ash
Very small solid particles ejected from a volcano during an eruption which have intermediate axes measuring 2 mm or less.
Composite Cone Volcano
A stratovolcano, also known as a composite volcano, is a conical volcano built up by many layers (strata) of hardened lava, tephra, pumice, and volcanic ash.
Dormant Volcano
A dormant volcano is an active volcano that is not erupting, but supposed to erupt again.
Extinct Volcano
An extinct volcano has not had an eruption for at least 10,000 years and is not expected to erupt again in a comparable time scale of the future.
Intrusive Volcanic Features
When magma is forced to the surface only a small amount of the mass actually reaches that level. Most of the magma is intruded into the crust where it solidifies into a range of features. These are often exposed at the surface by later erosion.
Lava Flow
lava expelled form volcano running down the volcano sides.
