What is a volcano?
An opening in the crust where molten rock and gas is ejected into the atmosphere.
What is a vent?
The ‘pipe’ that connects the magma chamber to the crater
What is the crater?
A dip at the summit of a volcano cone which emits lava and ash
What is the parasitic cone?
A smaller cone that develops on the side of the main cone. If the main vent is blocked the rising magma rises up a smaller channel and erupts from the side of the volcano
What is the cone?
The volcano itself is a cone, and is formed of the products of previous eruptions
What is the magma chamber?
A reservoir of molten rock within the crust below the volcano
What is an active volcano?
A volcano that has erupted in the past ten thousand years
What is a dormant volcano?
A volcano that has not erupted in the last ten thousand years but has the potential to erupt
