Describe the ash cloud.
A
Describe the vent of a volcano.
The opening in the volcano from where lava comes out.
Describe the lava of a volcano.
Molten rock which erupts from a volcano.
Describe the crater of a volcano.
The mouth of a volcano that surrounds the vent.
Describe the sill of a volcano.
A flat piece of rock which forms by hardening of magma in a crack in a volcano.
Describe the summit of a volcano.
The highest point.
Describe the ash of a volcano.
Small parts of lava or rock which are shot in the air by explosion.
Describe the throat of a volcano.
Conduit’s part that ejects lava and volcanic ash.
Describe the conduit of a volcano.
The passage in the volcano through which magma travels up.
Explain the difference between magma and lava.
Lava is molten rock that has reached the surface through volcanic vents whereas magma is molten rock stored under the surface.
Describe the process of volcanic eruptions.
Magma rises through the cracks or weaknesses in the Earth’s crust and pressure builds up inside the Earth. When the pressure is released magma explodes to the surface in an eruption. The lava cools and forms new rock.
Describe the different words for the activity of volcanoes and what they mean.
Active volcanoes are erupting or have erupted recently.
Extinct volcanoes have not erupted for thousands of years.
Dormant volcanoes have not erupted for over 20 years.
Name the 6 types of volcanoes.
