Volcanoes Flashcards
What is the plate tectonic theory?
It’s the theory that large plates that move individually make up the earths lithosphere
What is a constructive plate margin
It’s where two plates collide making new land. Example- mid Atlantic ridge
What is a Destructive plate margin and what is the zone called
It’s where two plates collide until one eventually slides under. This is known as subduction
What is a destructive collision plate margin
It is where 2 plates collide head on and can cause small earthquakes and fold mountains
What is conservative plate margin
It is where two plates going in different directions rub against each other
Effects of earthquakes
Landslides, ground shaking and tsunamis
What is the epicentre
Its the point on the surface directly above where the main earthquake is released
What is the Richter scale?
It is a scale to measure how serious an earthquake is
Where, what, and how deep is the Mariana Trench
South Pacific Ocean, it is the deepest location in the sea, and is it 11,000 metres deep
What is the ring of fire
It is a ring around the Pacific Ocean where most of the active volcanoes are
Active volcano
A volcano that erupts regularly
Dormant volcano
A volcano that hasn’t erupted in a while, but is likely to erupt again
Extinct volcano
A volcano that is very unlikely to erupt again
What is pyroclastic flow
A mix of very how ash, magma and gasses explosively ejected
